The world of fragrances is definitely complicated and to put it in simple words, each of these products has its own purpose. Here at Perfume24X7, we speak the language of perfumes every day. Here is a short and simple guide to help you differentiate between these products.
The most distinctive difference in-between all these products is the ratio between the perfume oil and alcohol.
So…
What is a cologne?
Cologne or Eau de Cologne is a very mild everyday fragrance for you. It has a perfume concentration of about 7%. They are the cheapest alternative to otherwise stronger and expensive perfumes. They last for about 2-3 hours and you may need to re-apply the fragrance.
Mostly, your everyday body sprays are EDC concentration. They’re great for those of you who like a milder scent profile.
What is aftershave?
As the name suggests, an aftershave is supposed to be used after shaving for the purpose of disinfecting your skin. Squirts of aftershave on your face after shaving can leave you feeling refreshed and scented. It is a great disinfectant for any possible shaving cuts on your face.
The perfume concentration in an after-shave is only 1-3%. The motive behind an aftershave is to just leave your skin scented. Unlike a cologne, it is not meant for projection or silage. The fragrance will last you from 1-2 hours.
What is perfume?
Apart from Eau de Cologne and aftershaves, there are other categories of scents that are typically what are called perfumes. They are EDT (Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, and Parfum)
Eau de Toilettes are the most popular options when it comes to buying fragrances. Depending on the strength of essential oils, an average EDT perfume contains about 5-10% of essential oils. They project well and have good silage. They last for a good amount of time, ranging from 6-8 hours. You might not need to apply them again.
The next most popular option when it comes to fragrance buying is Eau de Parfum. Depending on the strength of essential oils, an average EDP perfume contains 10-20% of essential oil concentration. They project better than EDTs but can be over-powering sometimes. They last longer than EDTs, anywhere around 8-10 hours.
The strongest out of all, Parfums, have the highest quantity of fragrance oil concentration. Their concentration is anywhere around 20-40%. They are extremely powerful and can sometimes irritate your nose. Just a little bit of perfume will last you a very long time. However, they can be expensive to purchase.
